The best conversations happen when you don’t know exactly what you’re going to say. The best writing happens when you don’t know exactly what you’re going to write.

Or how long you’re going to write for.

Don’t Write to Hit x Number

If you want to publish a series of articles just so you can pat yourself at the end of the year, and said “well-done kiddo you reached your target of publishing x” then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

Your fixation on getting the number right will make the process less enjoyable. If you instead change your goal to develop a consistent writing and editing habit that allows you to solve difficult problems, then your writing will pour out like a stream.

It Won’t be Perfect

What I write doesn’t have to be perfect, special, or fit into any other standardised notions for what writing should be. It’s a joy. It’s an expression. It’s a dance — and music in the background helps facilitate that. Find the music that helps you.

Think about the Impact

We live in a time where a well thought significant piece of writing can change the perspective of thousands of people. Why wouldn’t you want that? You’d only want that if you were committed to not caring about making things a little bit better on this planet or…

Overcome the Fear

Think about how much growth will result from you overcoming your fears of publishing. Think about how much you’ll learn from the process of seeing your work out there. And think about how you choosing to be yourself, through the act of sharing your work, will ripple into the rest of your life.

With time, you’ll become a more expressive and less inhibited being. Which means you’ll get stronger, and stronger. None of that will happen if you sit on your art. But it’s not perfect I hear a little voice in your mind say? Well, make it perfect then — or as perfect as you can. Get it to 80% of how could you think it could be and call it a day.
